Finder:
- Stop freaking putting every downloaded file in the bottom right of my Desktop, on top of the last downloaded file. Put the icon anywhere else on the free half of my Desktop.
My downloads take the next available free speace on my desktop.
- Tabbed Finder windows?
Pretty sure this is in Leopard. Didn't we see a pic somewhere?

My recommendation: restore it on 3.1.3 and sell it or give it to someone :)

I was in a phone with one of the Specialist in the Apple Store and he said there will be no iPad 2s today coming in. I was just calling them to swap my iPad 2. Genius agreed to swap me with the new iPad 2 after my iPad fails.
Just wanting to make sure whether they really dont have stock or maybe the stock is not yet coming in. I phoned about 10 am this morning. Anyone been there today and can clarify me?
Thanks a lot

every time i read these threads i'm reminded why i don't have an iphone. Yeah, i have many other apple devices, including a 3g ipad, but no iphone. I refuse to be a slave to the man. I wish subsidized devices didn't exist in this country. It reduces competition by locking people into contracts and ultimately holds technology back. Yeah, more people can own the "coolest" phone, but imho the ends don't justify the means.

My experience is Xp isn't that slow compared with 98. You just need a lot memory. I have a 700 flatpanel with 768 mb memory. I only run Kazaa and iMesh. (for educational reasons of course ;) )

i was all ready to plop some money down for a new 80gig iPod, even though I really dont need it. the big attraction for me was the battery life. however...
i upgraded the software in my current 30gig 5G and with the brightness controls turned down a bit, i noticed that movie playback lasts a good deal longer than it did, actually letting me watch a full 2.5 hour movie i encoded myself with a bit of life to burn at the end listening to music.
anyone else test the life of their 5G battery watching video with this new feature?

make sure you also have LESS than 512 MB ram in it. I've tried to install Panther on older G3 powerbooks several times and had to remove ram chips to get it to complete installation. After installing panther you can put the ram chip back in. Weird, but it works.
whatever

Microsoft has announced that it has halted development on a universal version of VirtualPC.
Digg This (http://digg.com/apple/Microsoft_Officially_Kills_Virtual_PC)
I used to use VirtualPC mainly to take screenshots for various Flash tutorials and demos that I created. Then one day I was in a rush and I took all of my screenshots using Safari and boy did people notice. The couldn't believe how much clearer the screens were and then one of my friends came forwarded and pointed out that most screenshots we see are taken from Macs in the first place.
I soon stopped relying on VPC more and more. My IT department upgraded our e-mail servers so that I use either Mail or Entourage to see my e-mail and slowly I stopped using it completely.
Back when the G5's came out, I could upgrade my machine because there was no support for VPC on a G5 (that changed eventually), but the thought of not being able to run VPC on Mac Pro has never crossed my mind.
The need for VPC in the Mac/Intel age is gone and Microsoft is wise to move on.
Perhaps they're doing this because they can now eaisly create and port native Mac OS apps.
Whatever

I don't know maybe because prior to January every consumer machine shipped since about 1990 has come with a consumer productivity suite and maybe I don't apple to lose sales because of sure stupidity. And yes iWork is like MS works. It is not an office suite, it was never meant to be, and it never will be one. It is the replacement for Appleworks. Hence the name iWork instead of Work Pro. Apple is smart enough to realize that it can't beat Microsoft in the office environment.
For the same reason the iLife suite is bundled with every Mac system -- to get people using them, and in the habit of buying the upgrades. I don't understand why Apple thinks this strategy works for iLife but not for iWork. Very short-sighted.
(1) Not even close to every machine ships with a productivity suite... in fact, if you look closely at what you're paying for when you buy most PC machines, those products that "ship standard" with your fancy new PC are built into the price. Most customizable online shops (Dell, et al.) allow you to remove that software and lower the price. So obviously, they are not free.
(2) iWork is undoubtably being groomed as a direct competitor to Office. There's no disputing that. It CURRENTLY is a replacement for AppleWorks, because it's still young and undeveloped in places, but it would be insane for Apple not to try and pursue part of the Office marketshare. It's an untapped resource, and frankly the Office programs are not very well constructed (with the exception of Excel). Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint are pretty lousy, and while Access is solid, it's certainly not leaps and bounds better than (PageMaker) <-- EDIT: Sorry, meant FileMaker.
(3) Bundling software, and then looking for profit on the backend with upgrades is a reasonable answer to the question. There's something to be said for that. But in the end, I think you're comparing Apples and Oranges. While at current, iWork is undeveloped, it is (as I said) being groomed to be a full suite of productivity Apps. iLife is a wonderful package of Apps, but they do not replace Pro Apps. iPhoto is garbage compared to Aperture or Photoshop. Pages is certainly not garbage compared to Word, and Keynote is already a much better App than PowerPoint. So I think there's a flaw in the argument here...

To me it sounds like you have some custom equalizer setting in iTunes to boost the bass because afaik it's a straight conversion that Garageband does, ie. what is in the MP3 file gets converted to AIFF. But if you want you can open the MP3 file in Audacity and export it as AIFF and see if there's any difference.
Unfortunately, I don't have any equalizers applied to my iTunes library. The conversion takes all bass away completely and there is a definitive difference in audio quality when playing the song in iTunes (or even in the import menu) compared to playing the song in GarageBand.
The song files are all either m4a or mp3, if this helps.

Nobody knows. We will likely know when Steve plans next years Macworld. If it is at SF, there is a good chance it will always be at SF.

Hi there,
I just attached a 3rd display (all Dells; one connected via DVI, the other two via DP->miniDP), and now my MP won't start up. None of the displays show anything (they stay black) and the MP doesn't make the chime after I push the button, as it should.
Am I doing something wrong?
